Drug abuse is the self administration of drugs in ways that are not their intended purpose and can lead to long time side affects such psychological and physical dependence. There are many reasons as to why people abuse drugs and some people are at a higher risk than others to becoming addicted. Some people easily become addicted due to genetics and others become more dependent of the drug to deal with conflicting emotions and pain ("Drug/Drugs").
There are many classes of drugs with hundreds upon hundreds of different drugs under those classifications. An example of a class of drug is depressants such as alcohol. They decrease activity and effectiveness of the central nervous system as well as induce drowsiness and calm the body and mind. There are many more classes including Narcotics like Heroin that create sedative effects. Psychedelics and Hallucinogens such as marijuana which distorts the users thoughts, moods, vision, and causes hallucinations, and Psycostimulants including cocaine and amphetamines which change and increase brain activity ("Drug/Drugs").
Prescription drugs are one of the most abused substances. The most often abused prescription drugs are the ones used to treat mental illness. Barbiturates and amphetamines are at the highest risk for abuse. There are entire laboratories that illegally produce amphetamines, mainly methamphetamine, which is notorious for being easy to create. This drug is very dangerous and very addictive and our bodies eventually build a tolerance which requires more and more to get high ("Prescription").
Overall, stimulants, opiates, and painkillers are typically the most addictive. Another very addictive and rather popular drug is cocaine. Cocaine is a very powerful drug and addiction occurs very quickly. At first the user is psychologically addicted because they believe the boosted confidence helps them deal with everyday troubles but this psychological dependence eventually turns into physical dependence. Symptoms of withdrawal from cocaine include serious physical and emotional discomfort and last for many weeks. Some more symptoms are pain and spasms in the muscles and drowsiness ("Prescription").
